More About Hout Bay
- Hout Bay was originally inhabited by the Khoi people, who called it "Houtkraal" or "Wooden Kraal". The Dutch arrived in the area in the 1650s and renamed it "Hout Bay". The area was used for timber production and fishing, and a small settlement grew up around the harbour. In the 19th century, the area became a popular tourist destination, and the town of Hout Bay was officially founded in 1867. Today, Hout Bay is a thriving town with a population of over 17,000 people. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and its fresh seafood. The town is also home to a number of schools, businesses, and community organizations.

I recently took a Seal Island boat trip with Circe Launches and had an amazing time! It was easy to find in Hout Bay, and there was plenty of parking too. Once we left the harbour the seas were a little rough – but for me that added to the fun of it!
After around 20 minutes we got up close to Seal Island and were able to see thousands of Cape fur seals. We spent around 10 minutes around the island, watching these charismatic animals dive in and out of the ocean. It was fascinating to watch, and you couldn’t help but fall in love with the pups – they were so cute!
Once we’d left the island, you could appreciate the beautiful scenery and take in the stunning sights. The crew were friendly and knowledgeable, and the boat was clean and comfortable – and for the price, it was fantastic value.
Overall, I had a great time on the Seal Island boat trip with Circe Launches. I would highly recommend that you add it to your Cape Town to-do list!
